Behind the Scenes: What Goes Into a Wet and Messy Shoot

We shoot a lot of wet and messy content. It’s one of our most requested categories and honestly one of the most fun to produce… when everything goes right. When it doesn’t, you’re standing in a room full of shaving cream trying to figure out where the backup wardrobe went.
Here’s a look at some of our messiest productions.
Eat My Cupcakes
Eat My Cupcakes with Sabina Rouge, Serene Siren and Sonny McKinley. Three girls, a table full of cupcakes, and zero restraint. They came in already laughing and it just escalated from there. We basically pointed the cameras and got out of the way.
The set needed to be repainted after this one.
Charlotte Cross Ruined Dinner Party

Ruined Dinner Party was a big one. Formal dinner setting, nice dresses, heels. Cakes, pies, caesar salad, fruit platter, pasta salad, deli meat and cheese spread, whipped cream. All of it. The production note said “clothing and shoes stay on at all times” and “improv is OK” which is basically all you need to tell a group of performers before things go sideways.
You can script the setup but you can’t script the look on someone’s face when a pie comes from an angle they didn’t expect.
Jillian Janson’s Condiment Game

The Condiment Game is a recurring format we do. Trivia game show, wrong answers get you doused. Ketchup, mustard, mayo, chocolate sauce, whipped cream, whatever we grabbed that week. Jillian’s round was great because she’s competitive. She actually wanted to win. She did not.
We’ve done this with Kymberly Jane, Ella Nova, Sasha Heart, Odette, and Sara Liz. Everyone plays it differently. Some get mad, some start cheating on purpose. It works because the stakes feel real even when everyone knows how it’s going to end.
Kymberly Jane in Shaving Cream

We love Kym. She’s hilarious and she had an absolute blast in a tub of shaving cream. Shaving Cream Fantasies was one of our earlier messy shoots. For reference, that tub took about 70 cans of shaving cream mixed with a bit of water to keep the consistency right.
The thing about shaving cream is it starts out fluffy and photogenic, then melts into a flat slick under the studio lights within minutes. You get one window to shoot the look you want before it turns into something completely different. Kym rolled with it.
Cassidy Klein Slow Drip Gunge
Cassidy’s gunge scene was a different vibe. Gunge is slower, thicker. Less chaos, more hypnotic. Slow pours, deliberate coverage. Getting the consistency right is the hard part… too thin and it just runs off, too thick and it sits there like a blob. Every batch comes out a little different so we test it before every shoot.
The logistics
Every messy shoot has a whole layer of production that clean shoots don’t. Everything happens on a massive sheet of plastic. When we wrap, we fold the whole thing up and take it to the dumpster. Sometimes we have to throw EVERYTHING away and make a dump run.
Wardrobe gets destroyed. If the brief says “clothes stay on,” those clothes are done. We buy duplicates if we think we’ll need a second take. Cold condiments on skin in an air conditioned studio is not fun for the performers so we try to keep things at room temperature, but some stuff (whipped cream, gels) changes consistency when it’s warm. It’s always a tradeoff.
And you can’t reset a food fight. Once that pie is in someone’s face, you either got the shot or you didn’t.

We’ve done food fights, gunge pours, condiment games, shaving cream, and stuff we’d never even thought of before a client described it. If you’ve got a concept, send it over. Browse our wet and messy collection to see what we’ve done, or just tell us what you’re thinking and we’ll figure it out.
